As a student of The Kybalion and a true hermitess, I am trying to adopt more and more each day the 7 hermetic principals.
I first discovered the Kabalian at the age of ten. My piano teacher who was an interesting eclectic hermit her self had the book on her coffee table.
For months I asked to borrow the book and she said it wasn’t until I could play a Bach song all the way through that she would loan me the book.
I never learned to play Bach all the way through. I did however win a plastic Bach head to sit on the edge of our piano in the living room. When I could reach the half way point (making several obvious mistakes), she gifted me the book and told me it was mine to keep.
I still have that tethered worn out book today and I swear by the seven hermetic principles.
A modern way of the hermetic principals has been presented in several different forms in many new age circles since the twentieth century but often fails in comparison to the original.
In this short video, I explain one of the 7 hermetic laws. The law of vibration.
The law of vibration is my favorite of the 7 hermetic principals. This principle embodies the truths that nothing rests, everything is in motion, and everything vibrates. It explains that matter, energy, and even spirit, are simply varying rates of vibration.
Hermetic writings are an alchemic, all encompassing revelation on occult, theological, and philosophical subjects ascribed to the Egyptian god Thoth (Greek Hermes Trismegistos [Hermes the Thrice-Greatest]), who was believed to be the inventor of writing and the patron of all the arts dependent on writing.
The collection, written in Greek and Latin, dates from the middle of the 1st to the end of the 3rd century AD.
1. The principle of mentalism.
"The All is Mind; the Universe is Mental." —The Kybalion
The principle of mentalism states that the universe is in a sense a mental projection. In other words, your thoughts really do create your reality.
For any beautiful creation to come into existence, a thought must precede it. Through this principle, it's believed that God is consciousness, or thought, and the universe is a manifestation of the mind where God is at the center of said thought.
Applying it Using this law, we have the power to harness the power of our minds to create the life we want.
2. The principle of correspondence.
"As above, so below; as below, so above."
The great Hermes coined this brilliant and very true phrase. It's closely related to the first principle of mentalism and states that what we hold in our thoughts and mind will become our reality. Ask yourself daily, how am I showing up in the world? Are my actions true to my reality? Am I flowing with the universe or, against it.
When we have a firm grasp on how we're interacting with life and how it's affecting us, we can recognize and break negative toxic karmic patterns, that no longer serve our highest good or the good of those around us.
3. The principle of vibration.
"Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates."
The Egyptian's used the vibration of sound to build the pyramids! So it must be true when we say that we only want “good vibes only”.
The principle of vibration states that all things, both physical matter and spiritual energy, hold a certain vibration.
Even scientific studies tell us atoms are in constant motion, as is the universe itself. When we're "vibrating high," we're able to avoid low-level frequencies that don't serve us.
Applying this principle will look different for everyone, but to apply this third principle, you want to do and think thoughts that allow you to be in a state of ease, where your body is vibrating at a high level.
With this principle, we acknowledge that we have the power to control our vibration with the foods we eat, the thoughts we keep, and the people we surround ourselves with. As I said above, this law is my favorite of the 7 hermetic principals.
4. The principle of polarity.
"Everything is dual; everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; like and unlike are the same; opposites are identical in nature but different in degree; extremes meet; all truths are but half-truths; all paradoxes may be reconciled."
Another personal favorite of the 7 hermetic principals is the principal of polarity. This hermetic law explains that opposite things are actually one and the same at varying degrees. A simple example of this is when opposites attract in love. We are often attracted to those traits we feel we do not possess but in reality we each possess those traits that we desire and others that are buried within us.
Physical matter and spiritual energy are the same thing. Love and hate are two ways of experiencing the same thing, a relationship toward something. This is the foundation of alchemy, or the ability to "transmute" your experiences at will.
To apply the principle of polarity takes mental stamina and involves shifting the way you look at everything. Take the hate you may feel for someone, ask yourself "is there any way I can shift it to feelings of love"? For example? Any time a lower vibrational emotion is bringing you down, can you recognize it, feel it, and transmute it to a more positive one?
5. The principle of rhythm.
Understanding rhythm, "Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates."
This is my favorite out of all of the hermetic principles. Knowing that there is a rhythm within all things gives me peace. Essentially, I see this law as all problems may be solved once we find the rhythm. We inhale and exhale. Everything is in motion. Nature has its seasons and so, too, do we.
Understanding this principle allows us to recognize the universe's natural rhythms, so we can actually work with them rather than having them working against us. In a sense, making things almost always workout in the favor of the highest good for all.
Applying this principle is somewhat easy. I once had a lover tell me that nothing last forever. He was right.
Knowing that nothing lasts forever, and things are ever changing gives us a freedom of choice to accept things as they are and flow with the rhythm of life.
As you get deeper into working with this law, you'll be able to work with your own emotional states to avoid a dramatic pendulum swing of feelings. It's thought that eventually the master will be able to completely transcend duality, but if you're just getting started, try becoming more aware of your emotional state and using polarity and rhythm to get and stay grounded.
6. The principle of cause and effect.
"Every cause has its effect; every effect has its cause; everything happens according to law; chance is but a name for law not recognized; there are many planes of causation, but nothing escapes the law.”
Everything is connected through the principle of cause and effect, for each cause of one thing is merely the effect of something else, going back to the very beginning.
Ask yourself, are you a cause? Or are you an effect? For example, if someone starts an argument with you do you walk away or do you fuel the fire? This principle is all about acknowledging the effects of our thoughts and behavior and how we may change them to bring about greater effects.
How to apply this law: When something doesn't go your way, ask yourself, what was the cause? Many times, we find ourselves reacting to the world around us. When we take action to get the effect we want, we move from feeling like a victim to feeling empowered.
7. The principle of gender.
"Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles; gender manifests on all planes."
This seventh principle states that all things have masculine and feminine or Yin and Yang qualities.
Masculine and feminine energy exists in not only the physical plane but the mental and spiritual aura as well.
Have you ever seen a woman that is out of balance and too much in her feminine energy? She constantly cries and cannot handle herself in a conversation. She will appear to be overly dramatic and needy to others. A man who is too much in his masculine energy will not be able to handle his workload due to trying to control everyone and everything around him. When we balance the Yin and yang we become invincible.
In order to apply this principle, we must learn to accept both the masculine and feminine aspects of ourselves. In turn, not knowing how to properly incorporate these aspects will be detrimental to our business and to our personal lives.
Time and time again I’ve seen in my practice men who have come to me say "I’ve been turned down by a woman and therefore I have tried to destroy her, her livelihood and her future". In turn, these men suffer dramatic losses in their businesses and personal lives. Something I say all the time is, "If you don't let go, prepare to be dragged"! I’ve also seen women that have gotten so wrapped up into men that they lose sight of their goals and aspirations by being too far into their feminine energy.
When we can achieve this balance within ourselves, we’re well equipped to harness all of these principles and use them in our lives for good.
If this all sounds like a lot, you don't need to worry. The 7 hermetic principals run extremely deep. It can take a long time to fully understand and embody them. Each time you come back to them, you may understand them in a new way, or on a deeper level. When applied to your everyday life, these principles can help you master your routine and your mind.
