Healing the Gut: How Nervous System Regulation Changed My Relationship With Food, Autoimmunity, and My Body

Introduction to my Personal Story 

For much of my life, I mistook control for health. What began as an eating disorder~moving between anorexia and bulimia~slowly evolved into a cascade of chronic conditions: Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism, cystic acne, eczema, psoriasis, and a nervous system that never truly felt safe.

From the outside, it looked like discipline. 

From the inside, it was survival. I didn’t understand then that my relationship with food wasn’t broken~it was dysregulated.

Disordered Eating Is a Nervous System Issue, Not a Willpower Issue 

Why Restriction Creates Obsession

When the body perceives famine~whether through restriction, purging, or chronic stress~it activates survival circuitry. The result:

• Hyper-focus on food

• Compulsive control behaviors

• Mental rigidity

• Emotional volatility

This isn’t a mindset problem. It’s biology.

How Gut Inflammation Affects Thought Patterns

Over 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. Inflammation disrupts:

• Neurotransmitter signaling 

• Hormonal balance

• Immune tolerance

Recovery didn’t come from eating “more.” It came from eating foods that reduced stress on my system. Living foods and juicing:
